Aboitiz Construction received a Sustainability Award from Aboitiz InfraCapital’s LIMA Estate for its Barangay Eco-Cycle Resource Facility Project in Malvar, Batangas, the company said on Monday.
The award was handed out during the LIMA Locator Appreciation Night held on March 21 at the Holiday Inn & Suites Batangas LIMA Park. The project, turned over in June 2024, involved the construction of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Barangay Bagong Pook to support improved community waste management.
The facility is jointly operated by Aboitiz Construction and the barangay, with full ownership to be transferred to the local government once the company completes its project in the area.
The initiative also included an education campaign for beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and barangay officials to promote proper waste segregation and recycling practices.
Since the turnover, the barangay has reported a 17.5% reduction in segregated waste and a 19.39% drop in landfill-bound waste, according to data submitted to the Malvar Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office.
“This award affirms our commitment to integrating sustainability into our projects and making a lasting impact on the communities where we operate,” said Karmine Andrea Ching, senior assistant vice president for business transformation at Aboitiz Construction.
The company said it plans to replicate the project in other host communities and conduct regular monitoring to ensure long-term impact.
